Manchester United have condemned fans who chanted about the Hillsborough disaster during last night’s defeat to Liverpool.
A number of abusive songs relating to the tragedy which cost the lives of 96 Reds supporters in April 1989 were audible at regular intervals during the first leg of the Europa League last 16 encounter between the sides at Anfield.
UEFA are awaiting a report from the game, which Liverpool won 2-0, before deciding to bring disciplinary action against the Old Trafford club.
Merseyside Police revealed that they received no complaints relating to inappropriate songs but United have today distanced themselves from those behind the incident.
“It has always been the position of Manchester United that chants of this nature, which refer to historical tragedies, have no place in the game and do not reflect the club’s values,” read a club statement.
“We are discussing with fans to seek support in preventing this behaviour in the future.”
