Wayne Rooney arrested and charged with drink-driving

Wayne Rooney has been arrested and charged with drink-driving.

The Everton striker was stopped police while driving a black VW Beetle in the early hours of Friday morning following a night out close to his Cheshire home.

Rooney, who returned to Goodison Park this summer, was approached by officers on Altrincham Road in Wilmslow shortly after 2am.

Cheshire Police have confirmed that the former England captain has been bailed and will appear at Stockport Magistrates’ Court on September 18.

He previously hit the headlines last November after gatecrashing a wedding reception while on international duty.

Pictures showed the 31-year-old and his now Blues’ teammate Phil Jagielka appearing worse for wear after making their way into the party at a Watford hotel.

Both Rooney and Jagielka were wearing England tracksuits following their national side’s World Cup qualifying win over Scotland at Wembley.

The Croxteth-born player announced his retirement from international football last week, just months after confirming his status as England’s all-time record goal scorer.
