A floating pool will form the centrepiece of Liverpool’s Commonwealth Games bid unveiling.
The 50-metre pool will be based near Albert Dock with a seated capacity for 5,000 spectators with potential TV audiences of over a billion also forecast.
Everton FC’s proposed new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock would serve as the main athletics venue, putting the city’s iconic waterfront at the heart of the bid.
The proposed pool will be joined to the dock walls but will float on the water, with the structure being opened to the public after the games have concluded.
Full details of Liverpool’s bid are to be unveiled later on Friday with Olympic-winning medalists Beth Tweddle, Steve Parry and boxing champion Tony Bellew.
Judges will visit the city next month and make a final decision on the winning bidder by the end of 2017, with Liverpool facing competition from Birmingham.
The 2022 games were due to be hosted by Durban but the South African city opted out due to concers they had not met the criteria for hosting the event.
Outside of the UK, Australia, Canada and Malaysia are all bidding to win the right to be host nations of the games in five years’ time.
