Review: Festive afternoon tea at The Richmond

The Richmond Hotel is one of Liverpool’s hidden gems.

Nestled away in the Hatton Garden area of Liverpool this Apart-Hotel is luxurious and houses the divine “R Brasserie”.

The “R Brasserie” is able to cater to all needs, from Afternoon Tea to 3 course lunches and evening meals. Set in a stylish black and white decor, it has a lovely atmosphere as hotel guests and visitors pass through.

Click Liverpool were invited along to try their special Festive Afternoon tea ahead of the Christmas period. The thing that struck me most was how busy the R Brasserie was on a Wednesday afternoon. Given that the hotel is a little further out of town, I’d expected it to be fairly quiet but this was not the case.

There was a great mix of people – some hotel guests, some businessmen and some people enjoying a girly afternoon tea. It gave the place a really nice lift and set the atmosphere well.

Afternoon Tea runs all year round at the hotel but we were treated to their festive special. The presentation of the Afternoon Tea is one of the best that I have come across.

The sandwiches were very fresh indeed – this is somewhat of an issue with many afternoon teas but it was very clear that these sandwiches had been freshly made and were to a very high standard.

We were served Turkey & Cranberry, Wensleydale Cheese and Watercress and Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese so there is something for everyone. My personal favourite was the Wensleydale Cheese.

One of my absolute favourite touches to this afternoon tea was the pigs in blankets. For me, there is nothing more Christmassy! They are served with a delicious Cranberry sauce and were a lovely treat on the savoury side of the service that made me feel that the team at The Richmond have gone the extra mile.

The cakes are by far the stand out piece of the Afternoon Tea. It is clear that consideration has been given to the flavourings but more so to the presentation.

One of the things I dislike most about some afternoon teas are large cakes that have been cut down – to me an afternoon tea should have small bite-size cakes, something The Richmond do very well indeed.

You are served delicious and beautifully presented individual cakes consisting of  Vanilla Mousseline, Lemon and Raspberry Tart , Chocolate & Baileys Cheesecake and Mini Mince Pies.

My personal favourite was the Vanilla Mousseline but each and every one of the cakes has been well thought out.

There are two options for beverages to accompany afternoon tea – if you’d like a selection of Tea’s then the price is set at £14.95 or for just £3 extra you can indulge in a glass of Prosecco or a Festive Cocktail.

The Richmond have found an excellent balance between luxury without being too stuffy. The surroundings are stunning (especially the Christmas decorations!) and the service from staff is excellent. The quality of the food served is very high indeed and offers excellent value for money.

Despite it’s slightly out of city centre location, this is the perfect spot for Afternoon Tea and I am sure it will become a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike.
