Aigburth man taking on 12-hour rowing challenge in memory of friend

An Aigburth man will take on an ‘oarsome’ 12-hour rowing challenge next Wednesday (20th December), to raise funds for Diabetes UK in memory of his friend.

Stuart Wenman, 44, will be completing the gruelling task on an indoor rowing machine at his local gym, in memory of Jamie Kinnier. Jamie, from Ruthin, North Wales, passed away from complications relating to Type 1 diabetes last year, aged 41.

Stuart will be attempting the challenge on the anniversary of Jamie’s death and aims to raise awareness of the struggles many people with the condition face.

Stuart explained:  “I’ve been rowing for over 17 years but have never attempted anything as big as this before. I wanted to do something to remember Jamie, and this was the perfect way for me to do that.”

The surveyor will be joined at the Pure Gym, Sefton Street, Liverpool, by family and friends providing moral support on the day. While he’ll be stopping the clock during much-needed breaks, he will be rowing for a total of 12 hours, which he expects will see him cover a massive distance of 150 kilometres.

Stuart’s training was briefly hampered after he chipped a bone and dislocated his finger at the end of August but he’s not let that stop him:

“I’ve had some tough training days but I’m hoping those experiences might make it easier when it comes to the main event. I’m incredibly grateful to my family and friends for all their support and encouragement.”

Stuart’s wife, Jo, said: “The dedication Stuart has had towards his training has been inspirational.  This immense challenge is a wonderful way to remember Jamie and raise awareness of diabetes – we’re all very proud of him.”

Stuart added: “Jamie often found diabetes difficult to manage and I know that many other people living with diabetes find it hard to take control of their condition. That’s why I’m supporting Diabetes UK, so that we can remember Jamie by helping others.”

Vickie Butcher, Diabetes UK Regional Fundraiser said: “Stuart is taking on an incredible challenge and we are grateful for all his support and work to raise awareness of diabetes. So please support Stuart’s efforts and help us achieve a world where diabetes can do no harm.”
