Ex-Merseyside Police HQ to be transformed

Merseyside Police’s former headquarters will undergo major regeneration.

Canning Place was officially placed on the market in August last year, some three years since the force had relocated to its current home at Rose Hill.

The site, which previously served as a nerve centre of the region’s policing operations for four decades, is now set to be sold to a government agency..

Emily Spurrell, Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner, confirmed on Thursday that Home England have been installed as the preferred bidders.

The housing and regeneration agency has submitted proposals to transform the 2.64-acre site into an ambitious ‘mixed-use waterfront development’.

Residential, hotel and retail, leisure and commercial spaces are likely to be incorporated in the plans, which were ranked best value of 13 bids submitted.

The money recouped from the sale will be reinvested into modernising and updating Merseyside Police’s stations and buildings to ensure officers and staff are best equipped to serve their communities across the region.

Eamonn Boylan, chief executive of Homes England, said: “Canning Place is a historic site in a prime location on Liverpool’s iconic waterfront.

“The acquisition of the former Merseyside Police headquarters would present a unique opportunity for Homes England to add to the significant legacy of regeneration in the area.

“Once the purchase of the site is completed, we will work with Liverpool City Council and Historic England to agree a masterplan that delivers a high-quality vision for the development that respects its waterfront setting, before selecting a development partner to transform the site into a mixed-use development fit for a new generation.”
