Futures of five Everton FC players plunged into fresh doubt

Five Everton players face uncertain futures after they were stripped of shirt numbers.

Oumar Niasse, Aiden McGeady, Conor McAleny, Luke Garbutt and Leandro Rodriguez were all left off the Blues’ squad list for the forthcoming season.

McGeady’s no.7 shirt has been handed to Gerard Deulofeu while Niasse’s no.14 remains vacant following his disastrous £13.5 million transfer.

Ronald Koeman previously intimated that Niasse had no future at Goodison Park, with Turkish side Galatasaray among the few to express an interest.

McGeady, meanwhile, spent the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday after failing to impress since his own 2014 move.

McAleny was a product of Everton’s vaunted youth system but has spent five successive loan spells with Football League clubs since 2012.

Garbutt has also plied his trade in the English footballing pyramid, with an injury-hit spell with Fulham last season being the left-back’s most recent experience.

Everton signed Rodriguez in summer 2015 but the striker made a solitary appearance before being farmed out to Brentford.

Other changes to squad numbers for the forthcoming campaign have seen Ross Barkley take up the number 8 shirt, swapping his old no.20 with Bryan Oviedo.

Muhamed Besic also has a new number on his back after the midfield enforcer took the no.21 vacated by Leon Osman earlier this summer.

New signing Idrissa Gueye has taken the Bosnian’s old no.17 shirt while fellow recruit Maarten Stekelenburg takes Steven Pienaar’s former number of 22.
