Merseyrail has apologised after Everton fans were left stranded at Sandhills station.
Supporters leaving the Carabao Cup third round tie with Wolves at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Wednesday (September 16) found themselves waiting for up to an hour.
An estimated 8,000 fans passed through the stadium after the game but were held up for a significant period due to an issue with an onboard train monitoring camera.
The train terminated at Sandhills but was not removed for 10 minutes which saw prolonged delays as queues on the single island platform were held up by half an hour.
It marked the latest issues surrounding the station since Everton’s move to their new purpose-built stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock at the beginning of last season.
A Merseyrail spokesperson said: “We had an additional service post-match scheduled for 22:20, however this service was terminated at Sandhills after a fault was identified with one of the train’s door monitoring cameras.
“In line with our safety procedures, the train was withdrawn from service and returned to depot for assessment.
“The train involved was moved after 10 minutes, this resulted in some delays to Northern Line services while passengers were safely detrained.
“We apologise to customers affected, particularly those travelling home after the football, and thank them for their patience.”
