Prized artefacts set to go on display at The Cavern Club exhibition have been revealed.
The Museum of Liverpool will mark 70 years of the iconic Mathew Street venue with 200 curated pieces spanning all seven decades of its legendary live music history.
They include John Lennon’s jacket worn during the recording of ‘With The Beatles’ and the band’s 1964 tour as well as Paul McCartney’s Cavern dressing table.
Gerry Marsden’s acoustic guitar as well as a unique contract for 15-year-old Stevie Wonder to play The Cavern in January 1966 will also be available for public viewing.
’70 Years of The Cavern Club’ is set to open on January 16, 2027 – exactly 70 years to the day since the club opened initially as a post-war jazz club in the city centre.
Created in collaboration with The Cavern Club, the exhibition charts the club’s journey from a Mathew Street cellar to a global cultural phenomenon.
A recreation of the iconic Cavern stage sits at the centre of the exhibition. The design takes its cues from the Cavern’s front and backstage worlds, inviting visitors to discover the people, music and stories that have played a part in the venue’s legacy and helped cement Liverpool as a world-renowned city of music.
Karen O’Rourke, vurator of Sport, Music and Performance at Museum of Liverpool, said: “This exhibition is our chance to tell that fuller story of the Cavern: the rise, the fall, the emotion, the people and its life today.
“We want visitors to leave our exhibition feeling The Cavern Club the way generations from across the globe have felt it, not only as a historic place, but as a living, breathing part of our amazing city.”
70 Years of The Cavern Club runs at Museum of Liverpool from Saturday, January 16 until Sunday, October 31, 2027.
