Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool will not take Tottenham’s malaise for granted.

Sunday’s Premier League encounter sees the north Londoners travelling to Anfield just a week after they suffered a 6-1 thrashing by Newcastle United.

Spurs parted company with caretaker Cristian Stellini in light of their humbling at St James’ Park, with Ryan Mason installed for the remainder of the season.

Their record against the Reds on home soil appears ominious with just one win in their previous 28 Premier League visits to Merseyside since 1994.

But Klopp has refused to alter his side’s approach ahead of facing one of their rivals for the final Champions League qualification place still up for grabs.

He said: “It’s not what I’m thinking about. I turned the Newcastle game on had to switch the television on. It was [already] 1-0.

“I had something else to do. When I came back, it was 5-0. I honestly thought something was wrong in the screen so I had to watch it back later.

“Newcastle is obviously in a very good moment, you could see that (against Everton) last night, so these things can happen.

“To find for yourself the right attitude in the game you, have to think the opponent is extermely strong – and they are strong.

“A very famous German quote said once, ‘If you always expect an easy game you will never have one, if you always expect a super difficult game from time to time, you might have an easy one’. But the other way around doesn’t work.

“I have no clue what happened to Tottenham. I see Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevski, Ivan Perisic, Richarlison, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and so on. They played exceptional football during their careers.

“We realised this year that we had some problems in moments and maybe other teams thought ‘Oh that’s a great moment to meet Liverpool’. Maybe it was, I don’t know.

“But if i would have been in the other camp I would never have imagined that Liverpool will show up weak and I cannot think about Tottenham in any other way than I expect them to be really strong.

“If you give them one ball, it could be the wrong one and they go and up and front of your goal. Harry Kane can score from pretty much everywhere.

“In a really difficult game last night, the big chance he prepared for Son, when Hojbjerg lets the ball go through, is exceptional.

“They have real quality and we have to make sure they cannot show it but that’s always the same.

“In the best Tottenham moments or in the lesser good moments, I respect a lot the quality of the team.”
