Liverpool fans slam ‘unjust’ ticket price hike

Liverpool fans have slammed ‘unjust’ season ticket increases for 2023/24.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will host games in the new Premier League campaign before a new capacity of over 61,000 after the Anfield Road End renovation.

But the Reds’ decision to raise renewal prices by 2%, the first ticketing increase in eight years, has been met with dismay from supporters.

Anfield officials insists the move will add no more than £17 to the price of any season tickets while juniors and local general sale prices will remain frozen.

A rise in the stadium’s annual operating costs increasing by nearly 40% and utility costs scaling 100% this term were also cited in the club’s justification.

Consultation over the potential impact of the renewal prices was held with the LFC Supporters’ Board, who vehemently opposed Tuesday’s announcement.

“To implement any price increase during this cost of living crisis is cruel, unjust, unreasonable and unfair,” read a statement from the group.

“These increases also come at a time when LFC is reporting record revenues, increased sponsorship income and significant increases from success on the pitch.

“Support for your football team stems from loyalty and that loyalty is two way. Fans cannot switch allegiance from one club to another yet it is their pockets which are being hit.

“We proposed many alternatives to wholesale price increases such as better facilities on the stadium concourses to encourage more fans to arrive early and keeping them open for a time after the match has finished, so those who can afford to spend can do so.

“Another was sponsorship deals and stand naming rights to generate extra returns.

“It is unfortunate and disappointing that they have not chosen to fully listen to the voice of the fans and recognise that football fans are not the cash cow to their balance sheet.”
