Mohamed Salah drew level with Sir Kenny Dalglish in Liverpool’s record-breaking Boxing Day win over Aston Villa.
Salah opened the scoring in the fifth minute at Villa Park, turning home Andy Robertson’s pass to set Jurgen Klopp’s side on their way to a 3-1 victory.
The Egypt international’s latest strike was his 172nd for the Reds in all competitions, a feat which equalled Dalglish’s haul between 1977 and 1990.
And the Anfield legend was quick to hail the feat of his latest frontline successor on social media following Monday night’s win in the Midlands.
“A fantastic achievement for Mo Salah and great to be in the stands to watch the goal go in,” said Dalglish.
“The first time I’ve taken my grandson to an away game – thank you for making it a memorable one!
“Delighted to hand over the baton and I hope it brings even more success!”
Robertson’s involvement saw him earn the distinction of the Premier League’s highest number of assists, overtaking ex-Everton defender Leighton Baines.
“I equalled it just before the break and I knew I did that with two against Southampton,” he told Amazon Prime Sport.
“During the break I just wanted to try to get back and beat it. I’m not really into individual things and things like that – I’m all for the team.
“But when you do stuff like that and you’re in the Premier League against some unbelievable defenders, it’s always nice to put yourself at the top there.”
Substitute Stefan Bajcetic also made history for Liverpool with a late strike to seal maximum points elevating him to the club’s third-youngest goal scorer.
