Klopp: Liverpool fans will respect Queen silence

Jurgen Klopp expects Liverpool fans to respect a minute’s silence for Queen Elizabeth II.

Tuesday’s Champions League group encounter with Ajax marks the first match in England since the death of the country’s longest reigning monarch.

The Reds have lodged a request with UEFA for a period of reflection to be held before the game at Anfield in line with a period of national mourning.

Earlier this year, sections of the club’s fans booed the national anthem before their FA Cup and Carabao Cup finals as well as prior to the Community Shield.

But Klopp remains confident that supporters will respond accordingly if the request for a silence is approved by European football’s governing body.

He said: “I think it is the right thing to do but I don’t think our people need any kind of advice from me for showing respect.

“There are plenty of examples where our people showed exactly the right respect.

“One which surprised me and I was really proud of that moment was last season when we played Manchester United around a very sad situation with Cristiano Ronaldo’s family – and that is what I expect [on Tuesday].

“For me, it is clear that’s what we have to do.”

Liverpool’s trip to Chelsea on Sunday, meanwhile, has been postponed due to police resources connected to the Queen’s state funeral on the following day.
