Liverpool’s game with Wolves has been postponed after Queen Elizabeth II’s death.
The Premier League confirmed on Friday morning that all of its upcoming weekend fixtures were suspended as a mark of respect to the late monarch.
Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s scheduled match at Anfield was cancelled shortly before the league’s announcement.
Liverpool Women’s opening Super League fixture at Reading on Sunday, their first in the top division since 2019/20, has also been postponed as a result.
It is the second time that a Reds’ game has been postponed due to the death of a member of the Royal family, with the previous one arriving in 1997.
A home clash with Newcastle United was previously called off just hours after the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales in Paris had been announced.
“The fixture will now be rescheduled, with updated details to follow in due course. Tickets will remain valid for the new match date,” confirmed a Liverpool statement.
“Please note, supporters who have purchased tickets for the Wolverhampton Wanderers game will be contacted directly by the club with further information once available.”
Plans for the Queen’s state funeral could also lead to further upheaval to the fixture calendar, with next weekend’s trip to Chelsea at risk of cancellation.
Should Liverpool’s clash at Stamford Bridge also be deferred, the first available midweek date to play either game would be mid-January next year.
Owing to the forthcoming World Cup and various domestic and European cup commitments, the earliest free midweek will be January 17 and 18, 2023.
Liverpool are currently scheduled to return to action against Ajax in next Tuesday’s Champions League group stage encounter at Anfield.
