Diogo Jota has signed a new five-year contract with Liverpool.
Jota was less than halfway through his original long-term deal signed in summer 2020 following his arrival from Wolves prior to agreeing new terms.
But the Portugal international’s fresh extension reflects his seismic impact and importance since linking up with Jurgen Klopp’s side two summers ago.
Talks to extend Jota’s stay at Anfield opened between his representative Jorge Mendes and new sporting director Julian Ward during pre-season.
And Jota, who scored 34 goals in 85 appearances for the Reds, admitted on Tuesday that the decision to extend his stay on Merseyside was ‘no-brainer’.
He said: “I think Liverpool at the moment is one of the best if not the best.
“We were close last year to winning the Champions League. That’s [something] all the players want. Hopefully we can give it a good go this year again.
“When you fight for everything, like we did last year, you just want to do it again and to do it better, because it’s possible.
“That drive is in me and I know it’s in my teammates and all the staff. We have everything to fight for those titles out there.”
Jota is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury picked up in Portugal’s Nations League campaign and will miss Saturday’s Premier League opener at Fulham.
““Unfortunately for me I had an upset in this pre-season because I got injured [in the] last game of the season playing with Portugal,” added the 25-year-old.
“I was coming back in this pre-season, I felt it a little bit again.
“So it will be a few more weeks.”
