Liverpool have opened talks to extend Jurgen Klopp’s contract until 2026.
Klopp previously indicated he would walk away from the longest-serving spell of his managerial career when his current Anfield deal expires in two years’ time.
But the German’s willingness to prolong his stay in the Reds’ hot seat has seen owners Fenway Sports Group accelerate discussions over his future.
FSG president Mike Gordon was present for Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg win over Villarreal, as was Klopp’s agent Marc Kosicke.
Liverpool have already extended Klopp’s original contract twice over, with the first in summer 2016, just months after he had replaced Brendan Rodgers.
On both occasions, the 54-year-old’s backroom staff were handed new deals and is likely to be the case for assistants Pep Lijnders and Peter Kraweitz.
Asked last month about the prospect of remaining on Merseyside, Klopp said: “If I have the energy levels for it. That is important.
“I love what I do but I’ve said a couple of times there must be something else out there in the world, to be honest, apart from always thinking about properly skilled, good-looking, fantastically nice football players.
“But I really don’t think about it.
“At the moment I am full of energy but we have to [and] I have to make sure that is the case.
“Because I don’t want to sit around and be more tired than others and think: ‘Wow, why is everyone bothered about the things out there because I couldn’t care less?’”
