Moshiri retains support for under-fire Benitez

Farhad Moshiri insists Rafael Benitez will not be sacked as Everton manager.

Benitez suffered his sixth defeat in seven Premier League games as the Blues were trounced 4-1 by Liverpool in Wednesday’s 239th Merseyside derby.

Events turned mutinous after the final whistle as fans called for the Spaniard’s removal while Bill Kenwright and Marcel Brands were both verbally abused.

Moshiri is expected to be in attendance at Goodison Park for next week’s visit of Arsenal but has reaffirmed support for the under-fire Benitez’s tenure.

In a message relayed by TalkSport, the British-Iranian billionaire is adamant the former Liverpool boss will oversee an upturn in form later this season.

“Football is about crisis one day and glory the following day,” said Moshiri, speaking from the United States.

“Rafa is a good manager and underperformance is largely due to the injuries.

“Next two weeks, we will get to a full squad and, in the meantime, results will improve.

“Rafa needs time to have his mark on the squad. He will be supported to add depth to the squad.

“Managers need time. I have no doubt that we will have a strong second-half to the season.”

Reflecting on Everton’s heaviest home derby defeat in over 39 years, Benitez admitted he is unfazed by the backlash his team received from supporters.

He said: “I am a professional and I have enough experience. I can see a team that is giving everything. The commitment of the players is there.

“We have to analyse the commitment, the effort and the desire of the players and after that, we have to make the right decisions.”
