Fabian Delph forced to miss Everton’s US tour

Fabian Delph is set to miss Everton’s US tour due to self-isolation protocols.

Delph was due to be part of Rafael Benitez’s squad which is preparing to fly out Stateside on Wednesday to take part in this summer’s Florida Cup.

However the midfielder, 31, will play no part in the four-team tournament after coming into contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.

Goodison Park officials insist Delph’s absence is a ‘precautionary measure’, having featured in their pre-season friendly win over Blackburn last weekend.

“Everton can confirm that Fabian Delph will not travel with the squad to the Florida Cup in Orlando as a precautionary measure after coming into contact with someone who has since tested positive for Covid-19,” read a club statement.

“Delph, who began his preparations for the coming season on 5 July and has played in both of the Club’s practice matches – including a 1-0 victory against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday – will resume his pre-season training as soon as his period of self-isolation is over.”

News of the former England international’s self-isolation status emerged mere hours before Arsenal announced their own withdrawal from the Florida Cup.

The Londoners were set to take part in the competition alongside the Blues, Serie A champions Inter Milan and Colombian outfit Millonarios this week.

But a spike of positive Covid-19 tests among the Gunners’ travelling party has led to Mikel Arteta’s side remaining grounded ahead of the tournament’s start.
