Ben Godfrey named in England’s Euro squad

Ben Godfrey has been named in England’s provisional Euro 2020 squad.

Gareth Southgate handed the Everton defender his first senior international call-up on the back of a stellar debut season with Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

His Goodison Park teammates Jordan Pickford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were also included in Tuesday’s initial 33-man list for this summer’s Finals.

Southgate faces the difficult task of trimming seven players from his final selections before UEFA’s squad submission deadline passes on June 1.

The Three Lions boss admitted that the versatility of both Godfrey, 23, and Brighton centre-back Ben White was a primary factor in their call-ups.

“These two [White and Godfrey] are very flexible,” said Southgate.

“They can play in different roles as well – left, right, midfield in White’s case. This is a great opportunity for us to get to know them a bit better.

“There’s no way of knowing how long they’ll be with us, but it should be a fantastic experience.”

Last week Everton fans voted Godfrey as the club’s Young Player of the Year after impressing since making his initial £20 million move from Norwich City.
