New Everton stadium approval delayed

Final approval on Everton’s new stadium application has been delayed.

Government ratification of the Blues’ plans to build a new home at Bramley-Moore Dock had been due to arrive on Wednesday following a 21-day period.

But Whitehall chiefs have now requested more time to consider the proposal, which was unanimously approved by Liverpool City Council in late February.

Everton and council officials expected a potential delay to the final outcome as a standard procedure due to the scale and complexity of the project.

A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council said: “Liverpool City Council has been informed by the Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government that the Secretary of State has requested more time to consider the resolution to approve Everton Football Club’s planning application to build a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

“This instruction has been accepted in accordance with national planning law.”

Everton remain hopeful work at Bramley-Moore Dock can begin this spring with a view to the 52,888-capacity arena being ready for the 2024/25 season.
