Alisson Becker’s father dies in tragic accident

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson is mourning the tragic death of his father.

Jose Becker passed away on Wednesday after being reported missing in Brazil while swimming at a dam on his property near the town of Lavras do Sul.

The body of the 57-year-old was located several hours later with local police confirming that the cause of death had been as a result of drowning.

Internacional, the former club of Alisson and his brother Muriel – a fellow professional goalkeeper, were among the first to offer public condolences.

Liverpool requested on Thursday afternoon that their player is afforded due privacy while coming to terms with the devastating loss of his parent.

“Liverpool FC is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Alisson Becker’s father, Jose,” read a club statement.

“The thoughts of everybody at the club are with Alisson and the Becker family at this incredibly sad and difficult time.

“The club requests that the media respects the privacy of Alisson and his family during this time.”

Tributes poured in from across the footballing world with Everton and Alisson’s Manchester United counterpart David de Gea offering support.

De Gea posted an image on Twitter of himself and Alisson embracing after a recent game with accompanied by the words ‘We are all with you’.

The death of the Brazil international’s father is the latest in a series of sad losses which the Premier League champions have suffered in recent months.

Both the club’s legendary goalkeeper Ray Clemence and former manager Gerard Houllier passed away within four weeks of each other last year.

Jurgen Klopp’s mother Elisabeth also died in January with the Liverpool boss unable to attend her funeral in Germany due to Covid travel restrictions.
