Review: The Ghosts of Christmas Past at St George’s Hall

Lovehistory have returned to St George’s Hall with a very special Christmas instalment. This festive season you will be treated to a sneak peak in to the deepest darkest areas of St George’s Hall whilst being reminded of the famous story of Scrooge.

The Ghosts of Christmas Past will be in residency until December 13, 2017. Lovehistory will once again delve into the depths of a Dickensian world, bringing to life some of the most beloved characters from much loved novelist Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol – with a specific focus on the darker elements of one of the authors’ best loved classics.

Having been to some of Lovehistory’s scarier shows – I was a little concerned about this one. As a huge fan of Christmas – I really didn’t fancy someone crushing my passion and scaring the living day lights out of me.

This wasn’t the standard spooky story and in fact, I would even call it family friendly (providing your family is over 10 years old!). It was more of an interactive version of Scrooge set in one of Liverpool’s most beautiful buildings.

The team have once again got the acting spot on – spooky but not so spooky that you are left terrified. The actors work hard to ensure that Dickensian them maintains and so it is borderline educational.

The event is not without a few jumpy moments – but they are more comical and actually quite welcome. The host of the evening is brilliant, funny but serious when needed and in my opinion makes the show.

I think the best thing about this particular performance is that it takes you in to areas that previous Lovehistory shows have not. I was expecting to see the court rooms and instead we stayed very much below the ground.

This is the perfect event in the warm up to Christmas. It’s festive without singing Christmas Carole’s and drinking mulled wine. Despite the serious theme – it managed to put me in the Christmas mood. It is a grungey alternative to a pantomime and will be a definite favourite with those who like a little spookiness all year round.

The Ghosts of Christmas Past is shown hourly at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm until Wednesday 13 December 2017. You can purchase in person at TicketQuarter, Echo Arena Liverpool, Kings Dock, online at www.ticketquarter.co.uk or on 0844 800 0410.
