Independent street food concept to open at Albert Dock

A new, independent family business, with a unique street food concept, is to open its first store at Albert Dock Liverpool later this week, it is announced today.

Puffle Waffle will sell a variant of a popular Hong Kong food-to-go – egg waffle cones filled with a variety of homemade flavours. The brainchild of Liverpool entrepreneur and managing director, Kenneth Cheung, Puffle Waffle will be located in the 152sq/ft former TIC building in Anchor Courtyard, close to the Beatles Story and Magical Mystery Tour.

The café is the latest independent to set up shop at Albert Dock, following the likes of Leather Satchel Co., and more recently, Dock Art. It is all part of the strategic reinvention of the retail and leisure offer of Albert Dock, led by the developer, Aberdeen Asset Management, with more landmark lettings on the cusp of being announced and further exciting discussions in advanced negotiations.

Chris Wright, of Aberdeen Asset Management, said: “When we launched our ambitious long-term vision for the iconic Albert Dock earlier this year, after acquiring the commercial spaces in 2016, we made it clear that it was our intention to bring the most interesting and exciting restaurant and retail brands to the Dock – and Puffle Waffle fits that brief ten-fold.

“Family-run, authentic, independent and unique to the city, Puffle Waffle will be a fantastic new addition to the Dock’s current offer and will no doubt delight our visitors. We look forward to working closely with Kenneth and his team as we welcome them to the growing Dock family.”

It was back in 2015 that Kenneth began to trial the Puffle Waffle concept at various food fairs locally, including Liverpool Food & Drink Festival. The product proved to be such a hit with customers he was given the confidence to seek out his own premises.

Ahead of the opening, Kenneth said: “To secure a location at Albert Dock is quite the dream. Here you are central to the city and all that it has to offer, from the world-class museums and attractions to the huge-scale events that happen on the waterfront throughout the year. And of course, you only have to look outside the window to appreciate the stunning architecture and beautiful surroundings. It’s amazing being here and we can’t wait to introduce locals and visitors to the delights of a Puffle Waffle.”

Speaking about the inspiration for the concept, he said “As a child growing up in Hong Kong, this was the everyday street food of choice – and it continues to be the top-selling street food there to this day.

“We are also unique in the fact that we use an age-old, traditional recipe that was created by my late grandfather, who was a successful restauranteur in Hong Kong for most of his life. This, combined with our unusual flavourings, makes for a unique culinary experience to suit all palates.”
Puffle Waffle at Albert Dock will open on Saturday, October 21, with a special Buy One Get One Free offer for every customer and a friend (who must be present!), running throughout the October half term until Saturday, October 28.
