A former Liverpool city centre butcher shop will be preserved after winning National Lottery funding.
The shop front of P. Galkoff on London Road is set to be protected and placed on display thanks to a £291,300 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the Museum of Liverpool will help preserve the tiled exterior as part of the legacy of the city’s Jewish history.
Galkoff’s decorative green tiles, installed in 1933, are due to be carefully removed and placed in the Museum of Liverpool as part of a new exhibition.
‘The Secret Life of Pembroke Place’ opens in October 2018 and will also include research of the lives, busines and homes of the surrounding area.
Janet Dugdale, Director of the Museum of Liverpool said: “We are thrilled to receive this endorsement by Heritage Lottery Fund.
“For the Museum of Liverpool to acquire the tiled façade of P. Galkoff butcher shop, a much-loved Liverpool landmark, and preserve it for the long term, is a wonderful lasting legacy.
“We look forward this project enabling us to explore the history of Liverpool’s Jewish community, as well as the wider story of Pembroke Place, in more detail.”
