First Brazilica 2017 line-up revealed

Liverpool’s waterfront will be given a makeover when Brazilica returns this summer.

With Brazilian culture heading to the Pier Head, the city’s international Samba festival has revealed its first list of musicians for next month’s 10th anniversary.

Carnival-goers will get to experience food, art and music from the South American country at the family-orientated festival from July 14.

Bixiga 70, a Sao Paolo ten-piece band, will bring their latin, jazz and afrobeat infused sound to Liverpool in the midst of their current European tour.

Afrosamba will pay homage to afro-Brazilian jazz as well as Papa JACA who will treat revellers to the sounds from the streets of Bahia, Rio and Sao Paolo.

Also on the line-up is saxophonist-songwriter Sam Qureshi and Sueli Gil whose band bring their unique take on Brazilian Bossa Nova and Latin jazz.

Capping off the first wave of acts announced, the festival will be injected with some Brazilian soul with a performance by singer-songwriter Aleh Ferreira.

Brazilica also sees the welcomed return of the Brazilian Film Festival along with a Fringe festival filled with workshops for festival-goers to take part in across the city.

Bringing the festival to a close, a night-time carnival parade from Abercromby Square to Williamson Square will colourfully conclude Brazilica’s 10th year.

Maeve Morris, artistic director of Liverpool Carnival Company, said: “Music and life intertwine in Brazil, and you can’t have Brazilica without a soundtrack of Latin American and Afro-Brazilian grooves.

“So I’m excited to be able to announce the line-up of talented bands and performers from here in the UK and much further afield who we have invited to help make this 10th anniversary Brazilica the most memorable yet.”
