Liverpool could be set to offload Lucas Leiva in their efforts to land Georginio Wijnaldum.
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez worked with the Brazilian midfielder during his time in charge of the Reds and is understood to be keen on a reunion on Tyneside.
Jurgen Klopp has identified Wijnaldum as a prime target as he attempts to rebuild his Liverpool squad but the Magpies are holding out for a deal worth in excess of £25 million.
However Benitez’s willingness to link up with Lucas could offer a part-exchange arrangement that would see the 29-year-old move to the Championship club.
The Daily Telegraph claim that the former Liverpool boss is also prepared to offer his former player the currently vacant captaincy in order to convince him to move to St James’ Park.
Lucas has opened himself to leaving Anfield in recent weeks with Besiktas among those interested in the midfielder.
Another player touted as a potential makeweight was Jon Flanagan but would only be a loan spell in light of the defender signing a new three-year deal.
