Jurgen Klopp has warned Loris Karius that he must deliver as Liverpool’s top goalkeeper.
Karius is set for a third consecutive outing as the Reds’ first-choice stopper in Monday’s visit to Swansea City despite facing intense scrutiny of late.
The one-time Germany under-21 international was roundly criticised after conceding Manchester City’s equaliser in his side’s 4-3 win last weekend.
Klopp has been questioned about his decision to restore Karius to the starting line-up after he endured a severely error-prone start to his Anfield career.
But the Liverpool manager insists that while the 24-year-old retains his support, the pressure is now on him to perform.
He said: “It’s a very difficult job being a goalkeeper or centre-half in Liverpool because nobody forgives you one mistake.
“Since I’ve been in it feels like if our goalkeeper makes a mistake, it’s a disaster and if any other goalkeeper makes a mistake, he’s still a fantastic goalkeeper and we should buy him.
“I’m really fine with our goalkeeper situation.
“Yes, Loris Karius could have made the save when Manchester City scored the first goal even when I think it was a world-class finish.
“But it always makes sense to say the truth. He’s a really good goalkeeper and we brought him in because we wanted him to play.
“There were a few difficulties but he’s settled as well and a lot of really good things in his game, they are natural.
“Now he can show them. We changed a lot of positions in the year, only with the goalkeeper it looks like we need to stick to our opinion for 20 years.
“I changed not my opinion but I changed the situation and that’s all. But of course Loris has to deliver, he knows that.
“Now he is the number-one and it means he can play a game and concede a goal like he conceded against Manchester City. It’s not that we want that but it’s still possible.
“But all the good things I like to see, a lot of good things in the games he played in the last few weeks, that’s why he’s [back] in.”
