Klopp urges Liverpool fans to forget Van Dijk fee

Jurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool fans to forget about Virgil van Dijk’s price tag.

Van Dijk became the most expensive defender in football after the Reds struck a £75 million deal with Southampton ahead of the January transfer window.

The figure surpasses Liverpool’s previous transfer record, set by the impending capture of RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita for a deal worth over £50m.

But Klopp insists that the financial aspect of the Holland international’s arrival should not become a focal point when he arrives at Anfield next month.

“He is quality that is why we got him and that is why we were interested in him,” said Klopp.

“It is difficult at the moment because technically he is still a player of Southampton. I can imagine people will think ‘wow, what a number it is’.

“But for me it is not really interesting.

“We do not make the price, the market makes the price and the first thing all Liverpool supporters should forget quite soon is the price.

“We only talk about the player and what he can bring in – his qualities, mentality and character.

“That is why we are really happy about it.”
