Liverpool FC avoid Van Dijk ‘tapping up’ punishment

Liverpool have escaped punishment for their failed pursuit of Virgil van Dijk.

Earlier this month Anfield officials were forced into an embarrassing public climbdown over the interest in the highly-rated Southampton defender.

Southampton reported the Reds to the Premier League amid suspicions that they had ‘tapped up’ Van Dijk after it emerged he preferred a move to Merseyside.

It was also claimed Jurgen Klopp had personally met with the Holland international to discuss a prospective £50 million summer move.

A public apology was issued on Liverpool’s official website although the threat of future ramifications had continued to loom over the club for several weeks.

But the Premier League are not preparing to pursue a case against the club.

Liverpool are already serving a two-year ban from signing academy players after they were found guilty of tapping up a 13-year-old player from Stoke City.
