Delays in Lamine Kone’s transfer to Everton have placed Brendan Galloway’s move to Newcastle on hold.
Galloway had been expected to secure a season-long loan to the Championship side in time for Saturday’s visit of Huddersfield Town.
But as the Blues close in on a deal with Sunderland for Kone, believed to be worth £18 million, the 20-year-old is temporarly staying put.
Everton had hoped to conclude a deal for the Ivory Coast international before the Premier League opener with Tottenham but have encountered minor setbacks.
Sunderland’s signings of former Manchester United defenders Paddy McNair and Donald Love have paved the way for Kone to move to Goodison Park.
He could join Ronald Koeman’s side later this weekend but Galloway’s proposed move to Tyneside is set to be held up until early next week.
Koeman has already begun reassembling his defence in the wake of John Stones’ departure to Manchester City with the signing of Wales captain Ashley Williams.
