Everton FC targeting Barcelona icon as part of managerial overhaul

Everton are reportedly planning to approach Marc Overmars to become the club’s new Director of Football.

Roberto Martinez’s successor is yet to be appointed despite a series of high-profile candidates in the frame but the Goodison Park hierarchy are said to be making tentative steps as part of their managerial overhaul this summer.

And the Daily Mail claim that Arsenal and Barcelona legend Overmars, who has developed a reputation as an astute recruiter in his role as Ajax’s technical director, could be appointed.

The 43-year-old enjoyed a good relationship with prospective new Blues boss Frank de Boer during the latter’s time in charge of the Eredivisie club.

Also in contention for the role is Joe Royle, who took temporary charge of Everton’s final game of the season against Norwich City alongside under-21 coach David Unsworth.

Now 67, Royle remains highly revered at Goodison from his time both as a player and the last Everton manager to lift a trophy, winning the FA Cup in 1995.

He was brought back to his former club by Martinez in 2014 as a professional development co-ordinator at the club’s youth academy.
