Everton 0-1 Burnley: Four things we learned

Jeff Hendrick helped Burnley to a first win at Everton in over 40 years.

Ronald Koeman reverted to a 4-4-2 formation for the Clarets’ visit to Goodison Park, with Oumar Niasse chosen to pair Dominic Calvert-Lewin in attack.

But despite a bright start by the Blues, Hendrick fired home after turning Morgan Schneiderlin to hand Sean Dyche’s side victory for the first time since 1976

Here were the key talking points from Goodison:

Koeman now on the brink

It’s hard to see where Ronald Koeman goes from here.

The Everton manager has exhausted all of his possible options.

He has changed formation, brought in youngsters and even given Oumar Niasse his chance but none have turned around a disastrous start to the campaign.

Against an organised Burnley side, Koeman appeared lost and his attempts to turn the scoreline back in his side’s favour all failed miserably.

Losing to the likes of Tottenham at home can be forgiven but not Burnley, even if the Clarets have been impressive away from home this season.

To the Goodison Park faithful has made their opinion clear, they want Koeman out. It remains to be seen if Farhad Moshiri feels the same.

Blues simply can’t defend

It seems ridiculous to suggest that a team coached by one of football’s greatest ever centre-backs cannot do their basic task – but that is exactly how it is.

Wonder goals such as that by Antonio Valencia, or flukes such as Harry Kane’s offering last month, can be overlooked but the rest are inexcusable.

Everton have now conceded 12 times in seven Premier League games this season and their opponents have not had to work particularly hard for them.

Jeff Hendrick’s opener was a perfect example as he was given the freedom of the Blues box to put his side ahead.

Such goals have become a regular sight and it is an issue Koeman and his team need to address urgently.

It may be time to go back to basics because teams that cannot defend do not last long in the Premier League.

Williams becoming a liability

It is a testament to just how short of serious options Everton are in central defence that Ashley Williams continues to be a regular starter.

The Welshman has been nothing short of a disaster this season, committing mistakes left, right and centre.

He was in similar form against the Clarets, lacking confidence on the ball and handing the opposition chances on a platter.

Indeed at times it seemed the away side’s strategy was to give him the ball and wait until he committed a mistake before pouncing.

At this moment in time, Williams is making Ramiro Funes Mori look world class.

That in itself speaks volumes.

Schneiderlin is on the slide

After signing in January, Morgan Schneiderlin quickly became a fan favourite.

He had started this season in fine form, too, before a red card in the defeat to Manchester City that appears to have sapped him of all his confidence.

Schneiderlin is now ponderous on the ball, unadventurous with his passing and lacking any sort of commitment to the cause.

The manner in which Hendrick skipped past him to score was simply embarrassing and nowhere near what you would expect of a £22 million man.

The France international needs to up his game because just like Everton teammate Williams, his performances are not up to scratch.
