Ronald Koeman has warned that Ross Barkley risks being sold this summer without agreeing a new Everton contract.
Barkley’s impressive run of form for the Blues saw him earn an England recall for their upcoming games with Germany and Lithuania later this month.
However the midfielder, 23, is yet to reach a decision on his long-term future at Goodison Park, with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season.
Talks are unlikely to take place until the current campaign has concluded but Koeman is keen to emphasise the importance of Barkley’s situation.
He said: “I think every situation is different. Ross is a boy from Everton and what we need to show to him is the best reasons to stay.
“Of course his situation is different because Ross is running out [of time]. Next season is his last year of contract.
“Football is business and you make decison at the end of the season and he needs to sign a new contract. If not, you need to sell the player.”
“That’s not an ultimatum but it’s normal – that’s business,” he added.
“You don’t give every player in his last season of contract and I think the player, by himself, needs to understand this. It’s not an ultimatum.
“I spoke to Ross about a new contract and it’s now up to the board to get that contract over the line. If not, then by the player, you see a new future for yourself.
“But I think that’s normal. that’s not strange talking.”
