Koeman: Rooney would ‘make Everton FC stronger’

Ronald Koeman has again opened the door for Wayne Rooney’s potential Everton return.

Rooney currently finds himself behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Manchester United’s pecking order and was unused by Jose Mourinho in their EFL Cup win over Southampton.

The England international continues to be linked with a return to his boyhood club as the battle to save his Old Trafford career appears increasingly ominous.

Earlier this month, Rooney turned down a move to the Chinese Super League in order to extend his career within the familiar setting of the Premier League.

And Koeman admits that the Blues would be stronger for 31-year-old’s presence.

“I believe that Wayne Rooney is still playing at a high level,” he told Sky Sports.

“I think he made a good choice to stay at Manchester United and in the Premier League because he has still two or three years in front of him to play on a high level.

“What will happen at the end of the season? I don’t know. But in my opinion he is one of the players who can make Everton stronger.

“It’s all about what the player likes, what Manchester United needs to do, and we are not involved in that project.

“But any player that we at Everton think can make the team stronger is welcome to the club.”
