Tranmere Rovers have appointed physio Les Parry as the club's first team manager until the end of the season.
Parry has been caretaker manager of the struggling League One club since the departure in October of former England star, John Barnes.
Eyebrows were raised when chairman, Peter Johnson appointed the popular physiopherapist, but Parry has guided Rovers to five wins and three draws during his time in temporary charge.
The appointment brings to an end a period of speculation during which a number of names were linked with the Merseyside club, including Robbie Fowler, Mixu Paatelainen and former Peterborough boss, Darren Ferguson.
The club, which face Premier League opposition Wolves in the third round of the FA Cup, will now seek a new physio with Parry continuing to hold both roles in the meantime.
Former players Shaun Garnett and Wayne Allison will also continue in their roles as first team coaches until the end of the season.
Mr Johnson said: "Les stepped into the breach, immediately stabilised the situation and there has been a significant improvement in the team's performances.
"Not only did we go five match matches unbeaten, but we also picked up four clean sheets in the space of six games.
"Les has embraced the role with the level of dedication that has been typical of his work throughout his career at Tranmere.
"Les, along with Shaun Garnett and Wayne Allison, has the respect of the players and the staff at Tranmere and I firmly believe he is capable of guiding us away from the bottom of the division.
"I wish all three every success in their roles."
