Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler is rumoured to be a surprise candidate for the manager's job at Tranmere Rovers.
The 34-year-old has been linked with a move to the Prenton Park dugout after Rovers sacked Fowler's former Anfield team mate John Barnes last week.
Fowler netted 183 goals in 369 appearances for the Reds and has enjoyed a rich vein of form for his current club North Queensland Fury for whom he has scored four goals in six games.
However the Australian club have strenuously denied that Fowler could be set to return to Merseyside.
A spokesman said: "North Queensland Fury FC is aware of a report that suggests marquee player Robbie Fowler could make the move back to Britain to play for League One club, Tranmere Rovers.
"Rovers have not approached the Fury in relation to Robbie Fowler."
Super Whites chairman Peter Johnson has confirmed that club physio Les Parry will remain in temporary charge for Saturday's League One clash at home to Brighton and Hove Albion and insisted that an announcement for Barnes' long-term successor will not be rushed.
He said: "In just a few days we have had a lot of interest in the position.
"We are determined to appoint the best possible candidate to take the club forward so we won't rush the decision and the process will continue into next week."
