John Barnes has been sacked as Tranmere Rovers after just 116 days in the job.

Barnes was fired along with his assistant manager Jason McAteer following Rovers' grim performance that see them near the bottom of League One.

Club physiotherapist Les Parry will act as caretaker manager assisted by reserves manager Shaun Garnett.

The dismissal of Barnes comes after Tranmere were ejected from the Johnstone's Paint Trophy by Bury and after they suffered eight defeats in eleven league outings.

Fans had started to become increasingly vocal in their criticism of the former Liverpool and England midfielder and his pal McAteer.

Sections of Tranmere's 400-strong travelling support at Gigg Lane were chanting for Barnes' dismissal even before the second round tie kicked-off.

Barnes confirmed he had conversations with chairman Peter Johnson following the 5-0 mauling by Millwall last weekend.

After the drubbing club Chairman Peter Johnson had a meeting with Barnes who later confessed the future looked bleak.

Barnes thought he needed more time and more resources but was not confident of getting either.

He said: "The chairman is saying 'what do you want to do, keep going?'

"i asked if he can magic up some money out of somewhere and he said "No, we can't. We can't change things by bringing players in'."

"Everyone wants time but there are managers who don't get time. I'm under more pressure than some people because we are down at the bottom."

But time ran out for Barnes on Friday morning when he was given his marching orders by Peter Johnson.

Johnson said: "Unfortunately results have not gone our way this season and we are at the wrong end of the table.

"We must now focus on finding the best possible candidate to help us climb the division.

"I urge all supporters to get behind Les, Shaun and the team on Monday night when we play at home to Stockport County."

Tranmere are at home to Stockport on Monday.

Barnes quit his job as the Jamaica national team manager in June to take the hot seat at Prenton park following the departure of former manager Ronnie Moore.
