Ronnie Moore: 'Tranmere Rovers looking sharp'

Tranmere Rovers manager Ronnie Moore has said that his players are in good shape ahead of the new season.

The Superwhites first-team commenced pre-season training last Monday (9th July) and were looking "sharp" within a matter of days, according to the coach.

Moore was quick to single out Andy Robinson, Lucas Akins and Ash Taylor for praise, but made it clear that he is pleased with the progress of the entire squad.

He said: "It's going really well. The players are nice and bright and sharp.

"A few have come back a little bit fitter than the others but in the main they're all good.

"Robbo is looking really sharp, I'm pleased with him. You can see he's done a little bit, as have Ash and Lucas. We've got some players with good pace now."

The Prenton Park outfit have been busy in the transfer market over the summer, despite a lack of disposable income.

Moore has bolstered his strikeforce with the signing of Ben Burgess from Notts County on a free transfer, while Frenchman Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro joined from League Two club Rochdale.

Everton youngester James Wallace has come in on loan to help strengthen the midfield, as has Danny Harrison, who was snapped up on a free transfer from Rotherham United.

Former Everton and Arsenal striker Francis Jeffers could also be added to that list having spend some time training with Rovers over the last week.

Moore lost a key defender in David Buchanan, who left to join Preston North End, but the signing of left fullback Paul Black from Oldham Athletic should help boost the rear guard.

Other outgoing players include John Welsh, Joss Labadie, Enoch Showunmi, Mustafa Tiryaki, David Raven, Andy Coughlin, Robbie Weir, and Martin Devaney.

Meanwhile, Rovers' plans to develop a new training complex at Woodchurch are back on track. The club have apparently re-submitted a joint planning application to Wirral Council to build 90 homes on the Ingleborough Road training ground and convert the Woodchurch Leisure Centre into a state-of-the art training facility that will also be open to the public.

Tranmere's pre-season preparations continue with a friendly against Cammell Laird at Kirklands on Monday 23rd July. Their League One campaign gets under way with a home game against Leyton Orient on 18th August.
