Tranmere Rovers player of the season David Buchanan has turned down the opportunity to remain at Prenton Park in favour of a move to Preston North End.

The influential left-back has agreed to sign a two-year contract with the Superwhites' League One rivals at the beginning of July.

Buchanan's former Tranmere skipper John Welsh previously turned down a Prenton Park stay to join Preston.

Preston chairman, Peter Ridsdale, said: "Our quiet progress in bringing in the players we have targeted is continuing. We are delighted to be able to announce David as our latest acquisition.

"His end of season awards at Tranmere illustrate the qualities we are getting and we look forward to him joining us on July 1st."

Tranmere signed the Rochdale-born defender from Scottish club Hamilton Academical in 2011.

His long-range strike against Leyton Orient in August also earned him the award for Tranmere's Goal of the Season in 2011-12.
