Manchester United defender Scott Wootton has today been linked with a loan move to Prenton Park.

The Birkenhead-born centre-half has progressed through the ranks at United having started his career at the Liverpool FC academy.

And speculation today suggested the 19-year-old is on the verge of joining Rovers, as current defender Jermaine Grandison comes to the end of his loan spell.

With Ian Goodison struggling with neck and back injuries, and Ash Taylor still out, a move for the promising youngster would make sense.

Wootton is a very reliable central defender, according to United U18s boss Paul McGuinness.

He said: "Reliability is something you always want from a defender. Scott tends to do the right things and is a good decision-maker on the pitch."

Wootton was named U18s' captain during 2009/10, and also regularly stepped up to reserve team duty, where he has continued this season.
