Tranmere Rovers 1 Charlton Athletic 1: Match Report

A battling second half display saw Rovers overcome an early goalkeeping error to earn a deserved point at Prenton Park.

On-loan Liverpool FC keeper Peter Gulacsi had a horror start on his return to Prenton Park, spilling a routine cross straight to Scott Wagstaff who rolled the ball home after just five minutes.

But Rovers didn't let their heads drop, and Enoch Showunmi's fourth goal of the season, following up a Jenning's header from a corner, was the least Parry's side deserved.

The Rovers manager made four changes to the side beaten at Yeovil.

Blanchard moved to right back in place of the injured Darville, with Welsh and Labadie returning to the centre of midfield.

Gulacsi replaced young Joe Collister, while Ian Thomas-Moore's hamstring strain gave Lucas Akins a start on the right of the front three.

And the Liverpool keeper made a terrible error with his first real involvement.

There seemed little danger as Charlton floated a free kick into the box, but the Hungarian somehow contrived to let the ball bounce of his chest, out of his grasp and fall to Wagstaff, for the simplest of goals.

Despite the early setback, Rovers created the better chances in the first half.

John Welsh went on a surging run in the twentieth minute, holding off four challenges before sending a left foot shot just wide.

A succession of Cresswell crosses from the left just evaded the Rovers forwards, as Showunmi and Goodison both had chances to put the ball in the net.

Late in the first half, Sam Morrow, who had struggled to make an impact in the early stages, was forced off with a hamstring strain.

And with the likes of Thomas-Moore and McGurk already out through injury, the stage was set for young Dale Jennings to make an impact.

A terrific second half display from the 17-year-old was nearly capped by a fantastic goal, as a powerful 35-yard drive was punched over by the Charlton keeper.

Rovers upped the pace from the first half, and inspired by the youngster's energy, set about the task of equalising with aplomb.

Welsh, who had been relatively anonymous in the first half, put in a real captain's performance, driving his side on from the start.

And it was encouraging to see him putting an arm round Jennings to offer advice on occasion, which will have boosted the wingers confidence.

Tranmere equalised on 53 minutes, through man of the moment Showunmi.

Another great delivery from Cresswell, this time from a corner, saw Jennings make a fantastic near post run, and though his header was well saved by the Charlton keeper, the rebound was tucked in by the big striker.

After that, Rovers looked the much more likely to score the winner, and came closest when Mendy scuffed a far post shot against the outside of the post soon after.

Referee Phil Gibbs was kept busy as a physical Charlton side produced foul after foul, and the southern outfit were lucky to see all eleven men make it to the final whistle, with five players booked.

It was Tranmere who made the most of things in the final minutes, and despite failing to score a vital winner, manager Parry will look back at this performance as a benchmark for future performances.

Rovers side: Gulacsi, Blanchard, Grandison, Goodison, Cresswell, Labadie, Welsh, Mendy, Morrow (Jennings 45+1), Showunmi, Akins. Substitutes not used: Collister, Cathalina, Wood, Bakayogo, Fraughan, Power.
