Tranmere Rovers may get cup reprieve as Accrington face FA charge

Accrington Stanley have been charged by the FA for fielding a player illegally in their Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory over Tranmere.

Ray Putterill, who scored in the game that was eventually decided by penalties, is alleged to have breached FA rules as he is currently serving a 42 day suspension issued by Liverpool county FA.

The ban, which came into force on August 30, relates to 'improper or insulting behaviour' towards a match referee during a match in April 2010 whilst playing for Halewood Town.

Accrington and Putterill have until 13 September to respond to the charge.

The Football League will be responsible for considering this matter with relation to Johnstone's Paint Trophy competition rules.

If Accrington are thrown out of the competition it would open the door for Rovers' reinstatement, who could then face Stockport County at home in the second round.

Stanley chief executive Robert Heys said: "We are in receipt of the letter informing us of the charge and will respond when we have investigated the facts.

"There are currently a number of questions regarding the case that we need answered before we can comment further."

Last season, Hartlepool United, who were involved in a relegation battle with Rovers, were docked three points and handed a suspended £10,000 fine for fielding an ineligible player in a league match.

A decision will need to be made by the date of the fixture, on week commencing October 5.
