Tranmere Rovers 1 Swindon Town 3 - Match Report

It will be a long time before we hear the words "We're Tranmere Rovers, we're top of the league" ringing out from the terraces of Prenton Park again if the team's current run of form goes on much longer.

Ronnie Moore's side may have shown some spirit during Tuesday night's 3-1 reverse against Swindon Town, but it was their fourth loss on the spin and one of several to come at the hands of fellow promotion rivals.

Rovers made three changes from the side that lost to Shrewsbury, bringing in Paul Corry, Michael Kay and David Amoo in place of injured duo Danny Holmes and Adam McGurk, and the suspended Liam Palmer.

The match started in lively fashion, with Rovers shot-stopper Owain Fon Williams keeping out James Collins's 25-yard drive in the sixth minute and Corry blasting over at the other end moments later.

Collins tested the Wales international again on 13 minutes, beating two defenders and shooting from inside the six-yard box, but Fon Williams saved at his near post.

Andy Robinson fired over Wes Foderingham's goal on 16th minutes but it was otherwise one-way traffic before the break.

Swindon missed a good opportunity to take the lead in the 19th minute when Miles Storey picked up a rebound eight yards from goal, but poked his effort wide of the post under pressure from the oncoming Fon Williams.

The Rovers keeper pulled off the save of the match just after the half-hour mark, deflecting away Collins's left-footed effort after Donervon Daniels failed to stop the striker's run on goal.

Collins's tenacity thoroughly deserved a goal, and he got his just desserts early in the second half. The forward pipped Fon Williams to a loose ball and beat the Tranmere keeper with a low strike into the bottom corner to make it 1-0 with 48 minutes on the clock.

Swindon's Gary Roberts had a goal disallowed for offside ten minutes later but it wasn't long before the visitors doubled their advantage. Raffaele De Vita played the ball forward and Roberts found the top corner from inside in spectacular fashion.

Rovers played their best football of the evening only after going two down. They pulled one back in the 78th minute when Max Power's free kick fell kindly for Daniels inside the area, and the loanee side-footed home his first goal for the club.

Tranmere piled on the pressure in the latter stages and came agonising close to an equaliser when Ash Taylor's last-ditch header was cleared off the line.

At the other end, however, Roberts spotted Fon Williams off his line and beat him with a cheeky lob from inside his own half to make it 3-1 right at the death.
