An Allerton golfer celebrated in style after victory in the Liverpool Open Amateur Golf Championship.
Dennis Yates, secured the trophy after carding a 69 to become the Liverpool Amateur Champion.
A shift manager for Northern Rail, Dennis had to endure a nerve-wracking wait for the result after teeing off at 6.30am - the first player to do so on the day.
Adding to the nerves was the fact that he left the course straight after his round to go on holiday - hoping he would hold onto his lead.
Dennis said: " I was first to tee off as I have the lowest handicap of the group.
"Let me tell you the conditions were horrendous, so under the circumstances I was delighted with the knock.
"My wife and I had booked a holiday ages ago and I didn't realise the dates clashed.
"I knew I had to play as it is my home course, so we left as soon as I had handed my card in at the clubhouse.
"It was nail biting waiting for the news. I kept ringing the club all day to check if I was still in the lead.
"When the news finally came through that I'd won later on in the evening, we went out and celebrated in style."
While Dennis relaxed safe in the knowledge of his victory, his father-in-law Jimmy Lowe collected the trophy on his behalf.
The 11th annual tournament was ravaged by torrential rain but according to organisers at the club, the course held up magnificently and they paid tribute to Glendale, who had the course in perfect condition for the day.
Sponsored by Liverpool City Council, the event raises money for Lord Mayor's Charity and this year £1,000 was presented to the Lady Mayor, Cllr Hazel Williams by the captain of the golf club.
Also in the winner's circle was Colin McAlley, who took the title in the nett score event with a round of 62 off a handicap of 11.
