Steven Gerrard and Peter Reid are backing the fight to keep their local cricket club from going under.
Once one of the cities most prestigious set-ups, the 150 year old Huyton Cricket Club has fallen on hard times recently due to a lack of funds.
But a surge of local support from Huyton footballing heroes may now save the club from going under.
A fundraising event at Café Sports England, the city centre bar owned by Jamie Carragher is to be held on may 2 where cash rasied by an auction, and money taken on the door will go to support the Huyton Lane club.
Local law firm Duncan Gibbs Solicitors have joined the celebrity list of backers by offering the club a year long sponsorship deal worth thousands of pounds.
Duncan Gibbins said: "As a local employer we’ve seen at first hand the value of the club to the community and wanted to help. The money will pay for new carpets, new sight screens and help towards general maintenance for the club house and pitches.”
Club chairman Joe Foley feels with such esteemed supporters, the future of Huyton CC is looking bright.
He said: "Following our appeal earlier this year, a number of local people have got behind the campaign. This will give us another innings but we need to continue the fundraising to make sure we are not bowled out for good.”
Tickets for the fundraiser are £35 each with a signed picture and book from Jamie Carragher available to those booking in a table of ten.
