Those who think polo is just for the rich and the well-to-do... think again.
The game is galloping into the twenty first century as the World Polo Series 'Polo Roadshow' comes to Liverpool to teach would-be enthusiasts about the merits and magic of the match.
The road tour is part of 'Polo in the Park 2010' which was launched by model Jodie Kidd earlier this week.
Jodie, a keen polo player and the World Polo Series Ambassador, announced the game's change to the new 'Twenty20' rules of play – a new Formula 1 style that is accelerating polo from a pass-time into a professional sport.
As part of the latest groundbreaking rules, there will now be eight teams in total – four more than last year. They will each lose a player, meaning there are just three players per side.
There now also needs to be a female member in the team and they will be playing on a smaller pitch, which means more speed, more goals and more spectator interaction.
The game is keen to shake off its image as an elite male sport and since 2007 more than half of all new polo players in the UK are women.
As the sport opens up to a wider audience, school children are also being encouraged to give it a go.
The World Polo Series takes place on the 4th, 5th and 6th June 2010.
