A packed out Echo arena witnessed a split decision victory for new British super-middleweight champion Paul Smith over Tony Quigley on Saturday.

In a fight that struggled to live up to the billing, Smith edged Quigley out on points 116-113, 116-112 to Quigley’s 116-114 score.

In a massive night for local boxing, Smith hailed the occasion as ‘amazing’ and called for more nights like Saturday’s, that was screened live on Sky Sports.

“That’s what the sport is all about and hopefully this is the first of many big nights for Liverpool. It was amazing.” Said Smith.

“It was incredible out there and reminded me so much of the early days when Ricky Hatton was selling out the MEN Arena in Manchester.”

Both fighters were forcibly restrained at the press conference leading up to the fight, but they embraced after the fight with Smith simply putting it down to part of the sport.

"That’s why there was a lot of animosity in the build-up. I can’t fight someone I like, that’s why my brothers beat me up in sparring. I had to make this personal and make him stand and fight.

“But there was no malice in the fight itself. The low blow I hit him with was a total accident. At the end of the day this is a sport and we’re both professionals.”

Quigley won the title off Tony Dodson at the same venue in March, but accepted the points decision in a graceful manner.

“I gave it 100% again, like I did last time. It was my night against (Tony) Dodson in March and maybe it was just Paul’s night tonight.

“I’ve been in with two big punchers now and I have won one and now lost one. That’s boxing for you, but I will be back.”

Promoter Frank Warren hailed the night a success.

“It was a great night for Liverpool boxing, although the main event was a little tense.” Said Warren.

“But I am delighted for Paul. I went out and won the purse bids for this fight so he could headline a show here in his home town and he produced the goods when it mattered most.

“Again I would like to praise Tony Quigley for his incredible effort. To fight at that level after just 15 fights is remarkable and this decision was close.” He added.
