Chester City Football Club has announced the appointment of Mick Wadsworth as first-team manager.

Wadsworth, 58, is a former player with Scunthorpe United but is best know for his decades of experience as a football coach and manager.

His most recent roles include manager of Portuguese side Beira-Mar, assistant manager to Gary Peters at Shrewsbury Town, and as caretaker manager and director of football for Scottish club Gretna before the club dissolved in May 2008 after suffering severe financial difficulties.

Bob Gray, managing director of Chester City FC, says: "We’re absolutely delighted Mick has agreed to join Chester City as manager and he was our first choice for the position.

"Mick brings with him a wealth of football knowledge, experience and contacts gained throughout a varied and successful career from non-league football through to the Premiership.

"We’re confident his passion and expertise will help Chester City claw back our 10 point deficit and target a play-off place. The future is bright but we need fans to get behind the club and the new manager."

Wadsworth began his coaching career with the FA in 1985, which would include a role with the national team at the 1990 FIFA World Cup, five years as manager of England youth team and a coaching role with England’s under-21s.

In 1993 Wadsworth was appointed Carlisle United manager and in his first season took the club to the playoffs in Division Three. The following season Carlisle would reach the final of the Auto Windsceens Trophy and win promotion to Division Two.

He then moved Norwich City as assistant to Gary Megson in 1996 before becoming manager with Scarborough where he took the club to the play-off semi-finals in his second season.

Following stints with Colchester and Crystal Palace he became assistant manager to Bobby Robson at Newcastle United in 1999 before moving to Southampton with Stuart Gray in 2001.

Management positions with Oldham, Huddersfield and as national coach for the Democratic Republic of Congo followed until his appointment with Beira-Mar in 2004.

Wadsworth will replace outgoing manager Mark Wright to start pre-season training before Chester’s first fixture on August 8.
