Macclesfield Town 2 Southport FC 2 - Match Report

Southport FC threw away a two-goal advantage to draw with Macclesfield Town at Moss Rose in their first game of 2013.

The Sandgrounders took the lead against the run of play with an eighth-minute penalty from Chris Lever after Craig Braham-Barrett brought down Shaun Whalley in the penalty area.

Liam Watson’s side soon began to dominate the game, and doubled their lead three minutes later when Lever capitalised on a botched clearance by Braham-Barrett to score his second of the afternoon.

Southport played some good football and were on top for much of the first half and some of the second, but a collapse in the final ten minutes cost them three points.

Matthew Barnes-Homer guided home Waide Fairhurst's cross in the 81st minute and netted an equaliser with just seven minutes remaining after Southport keeper Tony McMillan spilled a strike from Fairhurst.

There was late drama as Chris Lynch headed against the Macclesfield crossbar in stoppage time, but Watson's men were left ruing their missed chances.

The result leaves Southport in 19th place in the Blue Square Bet Conference Premier, just two points clear of the drop zone.
