Liverpool-based sporting legends go head to head and invite fans to join together for local charities in the Merseyside Big Heart 5K on September 2.

The race was set up in memory of Everton legend Alan Ball who died of a heart attack in 2007.

Sporting stars are calling on fans to help raise money for Everton in the Community and The Liverpool FC Foundation.

The race will see a battle between Reds and Blues as fans from both sides of the city join together for a common cause.

It will start at 10.00am in Walton Hall Park, with all fans wearing their chosen colour t-shirt.

Race ambassador and British Heavyweight and commonwealth Champion David Price has signed up.

He said: “I urge everyone to take part. With reds and blues fans coming together in a race, this is only a good thing. Football aside, we are all one at the end of the day and as a city we should stand together, that is what is important.”

Legend Joe Royle will set the race off, he said: “This is set to be a fantastic running event. I’m well aware over the years competition between both clubs has become more aggressive but this is a great opportunity to make a positive change and both sides come together.

"The day is family friendly and the big heart 5K run is about supporting a healthy lifestyle and to encourage participation through the ages.”

Both of the chosen charities aim to combine sports with education by offering football programs and initiatives to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Alan Kennedy will also be attending, becoming a Liverpool star after winning two European Cups during his time at Anfield.

“The event is set to be a great day, said Kennedy. “I encourage all reds fans to take part.

“Even if you haven’t run before, it’s a really great team event for both sets of fans, it’s great fun and, most of all, it helps some really good local causes.”

For the first time, this event will use electronic timings, and the overall winner will be determined from these.

The official sponsor of the event, Fitwell, is a local printing and embroidering company.

Managing Director of Fitwell, Tim Edwards, said: “As a local company we are extremely proud to sponsor the event.

“I am a huge football fan and really looking forward to the competitive element of the event.”
